Summer is coming…Again.
A “Wet Hot American Summer” that is. The prequel to the 2001 cult classic is coming to Netflix on July 31st.
At first I was very skeptical about the 8 episode prequel. The original movie
had an all-star cast including: Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Amy Pohler, Elizabeth Banks and Christopher Meloni (all mentioned are returning for the show) to name a few. Even with that cast the movie had a lot of issues in my opinion.
To prevent this from becoming a full on rant, I’ll just mention two main things. For a comedy there weren’t that many laughs, a lot of the time the jokes came out bland and forced. The characters felt shallow. They had no real backstory or purpose. None of these issues were the actor’s fault.
I believe that the movie time limit was what affected it. With the prequel getting the Netflix treatment, the characters will have the chance to be fleshed out and possibly get better backstories. Developing better characters will give the actors more freedom to exercise their acting and comedic talents.
The movie took place on the last day of summer; the show will start at the beginning. The trailer for Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp gives me hope. Hope to see what I wanted from the movie, a great story and big laughs.
