Pay the Piper: Tribute To Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper

August 4, 2015

WWE is called the land of the giants…how does a small, scrawny guy get over in this business?

You must have a giant personality. Like the icon and WWE Hall of Famer, Roderick Toombs, better known as Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper. His career started in the late 70s, getting his big break in Los Angeles. Piper set the tone for most current heels (bad guys/antagonist) in the wrestling business.

Piper is most known for many famous and infamous moments in wrestling history. Like on his talk show Piper’s Pit when he hit Superfly Jimmy Snuka in the head with a coconut. Or shaving the head of little person by the name of the Haiti Kid.

He was in the main event of the very first Wrestlemania in 1985, which was a tag match with Him and Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff vs Hulk Hogan and Mr T. In

Wrestlemania 2 he went on to face Mr T in a singles match. Piper has gone on record for his dislike of Mr T. Also,  off camera for his lack of knowledge and respect for wrestling. If you watch that match you see Piper threw a stool at him…that was legit. Piper was frustrated at the match. Piper is known as one of the greatest wrestlers to never hold a major world title but he was WWE Intercontinental champion.

Outside the ring Piper starred in the cult classic They Live and many others. Piper also is a cancer survivor

Some would argue that Piper and Hogan were the ones that made pro wrestling

mainstream. Yes, Everyone knows Hulk Hogan is the poster boy for pro wrestling, but you can’t have a hero without a villain…Piper was that villain. With Piper’s passing on July 31st 2015, The wrestling and entertainment businesses lost a true icon. We, here at Nerdbot send out our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all his fans.

Here is the tribute video from WWE Raw.
