Remembering Alan Rickman
One of the first action movies I ever saw as a child was Die Hard. As any child growing up in the 80'sand 90's will tell you, Die Hard is still one of the best action movies of all time, if not THE best action movie. Ever. Part of Die Hard's appeal was that it was doing new things to the genre but besides the obvious standout breakout role from Bruce Willis, we were graced with the presence of Alan Rickman who knocked it out of the park with his portrayal of nefarious villain, Hans Gruber.
With classically trained acting chops and an unmistakable voice, Rickman's range from intimidating to warm and funny was as large as his screen presence. Over the years Rickman gained more popularity with roles like The Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as Lazarus in Galaxy Quest, the Metatron in Dogma and his other most notable role as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise. Many of the actors in Harry Potter were cast so perfectly for their roles and Rickman was no exception as he embodied Severus Snape, injecting a stronger pathos to a character we had all written off as a villain.
Rickman solidified his place in cinematic history with his role in Die Hard, a film that is still popular and influential to this day, however with Snape's character arc in Harry Potter, he solidified his place in our hearts and minds. He will be missed. R.I.P. 1946 - 2016
