Back in Black –Venom Emerges from Development Hell
The long anticipated Spider-Man spinoff of our favorite gooey, alien symbiote is now back in development. This project had directors coming and going including Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) and Josh Trank (Fant4stic, Chronicle). But now, the Hollywood Reporter states Dante Harper is to write a script for Venom, with no previous writing credits and one directing project in 1996 called, The Delicate Art of the Rifle. The film is being envisioned as a franchise separate from the new upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man film. We have yet to know which incarnation of Venom will be the center of the film. Venom first appeared in The Amazing Spiderman comics in the 1980s as an alien villain without a solid form. The liquid creature moved from host to host to sustain himself and eventually found himself in control of Spider-Man. Venom is no stranger to the big screen. In 2007, Venom made his first movie appearance in Spider-Man 3, as Eddie Brock played by Topher Grace. However, this iteration of Venom was nowhere near the same character we know from the comics. So, if you haven’t seen Spider-Man 3, let’s just say that you didn't miss anything. We also don’t know if Disney has anything to do with this Venom standalone film. Back in February of 2015, it was announced that Sony would partner with Disney to not only bring Spider-Man to the MCU, but also oversee the upcoming Spider-Man film. We’ll have to see if the deal included The Amazing Spider-Man spinoffs. Regardless of Disney’s involvement, this can be a great thing for Venom fans who felt cheated from his first film appearance. Maybe this time around, fans will get not the Venom studios think we deserve but the Venom we actually need.
