To celebrate the nerdy women in our lives here are 5 popular nerdy content you didn’t know were led by women:
In 1818, the first science fiction novel EVER was not only written by a woman but a young woman of 21 years. Frankenstein has been labeled as the Modern Prometheus, being taught in schools, and had been adapted into many movies, shows, and plays.
Co-writer and co-director of the beloved Matrix series with her brother in which they both won the Saturn Award for Best Director for the first film. Lana also had a hand in writing and producing V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas, and the Netflix series, Sense 8. Her and her brother were professionally known as the “Wachowski Brothers” until after her sex reassignment in which they are now referred to as “The Wachowskis.”
The English screenwriter co-wrote for one of the better of the X-men movies, X-men First Class, as well as my personal favorite, Kingsman: The Secret Service. She also worked on the acclaimed Kick-Ass adaptation, and everyone’s favorite classic, Stardust. She adapted a script from the original young adult novel for the upcoming Tim Burton film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, scheduled to hit theaters in September 2016.
Japanese author and illustrator wrote one of the most popular manga series, Fullmetal Alchemist. Two anime series have spawned from the original print media which both received high reviews. The series follows the typical “shonen” (think predominantly boy audience as oppose to Sailor Moon, which has a higher female target audience) formula, so new fans are often surprised that the author/artist is female.
Not only is she co-founder but she is also the studio director of gamd development studio, Media Molecule, of LittleBigPlanet fame. In 2009, she won the first ever Microsoft Women in Gaming Award for Production and is one of Fortune’s 10 Powerful Women in Gaming. Reddy’s goal was not only to diversify the industry but to produce better games. Her team is currently working on a sequel to the multi-award winning game, “Tearaway.”
