The latest movie in the X-Men reboot series is the highly anticipated third film in the franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse. The film will reintroduce members of the X-Men team that we’re familiar with but in younger or villainous forms. We will also see the end of the saga between Magneto, Mystique, and Professor Xavier. Most importantly we will see the ancestors of all mutants in this film: Apocalypse. Here is a little glimpse into what the movie has in store for all of us. Grab your blue and yellow tights and strap into the X-Jet because I am going to give you some X-facts before you watch the movie in May. Spoilers ahead, bub.
Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac) is considered the first mutant to exist. He was born in Aqaba, Jordan and was named En Sabah Nur which means “The First One.” With his never before seen abilities, he was worshiped like a god and his stories are told from generation to generation. The almost immortal mutant has the power to alter his DNA, gain super strength and intelligence, alter and generate limbs. He’s also telekinetic and telepathic. On top of all this, he has labs and equipment that help him regenerate and also alter other mutants that follow him. He always has a set of four mutants that are called his Four Horsemen of Apocalypse. This big bad is all about survival of the fittest. If you are human, weak, or stand in his way, watch out.
Both new and familiar characters of the main cast have come from the most popular of the original X-Men team. We will see the return of Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan) aka Cyclops the future leader of the X-Men as a teenager learning to control his fear and powers. Next is his love interest and future wife Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) who is being mentored by Professor X. Everyone’s favorite teleporting blue mutant, Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-Mcphee), is also making a return. Lana Condor will also be making her cinematic debut as Jubliee.
Working with Magneto, we see the weather manipulator Ororo Munroe aka Storm (Alexandra Shipp), the psychic assassin Betsy Braddock aka Psylocke (Olivia Munn), the metal winged Warren Worthington III aka Archangel as Apocalypse’s dark horsemen.
Professor X (James McAvoy), Hank Mccoy (Nicholas Hoult), and Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) are back helping mutants and teaching at the institute after the events of Days of Future Past. We will see them bounce back from the versions we’ve seen in the previous film. Professor X will also be in his iconic suit, in his wheelchair, and bald. This time around it looks like Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) is on the side of the X-Men as seen in trailers leading the young students into battle. I am hoping to see her dive down into her villainous form after the dust is settled. Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is back and he is still extremely pissed off. The actions of the last film have drove him to Apocalypse’s side as one of his horsemen.
We will see how much the growth of William Stryker (Josh Helman) and also what Quicksilver (Evan Peters) has been up to. The film will conclude storylines set forth in the first two movies which means we will see a lot of familiar faces like Alex Summers aka Havok. Alex and Scott are brothers in the comics. Since they’re both in the movie this time around, the question is are they still brothers or have they been rewritten to be cousins?
The other questions is where is Logan?
X-Men Apocalypse will explore multiple storylines from the comics as well wrap up this part of the mutant saga. Some of the story arcs being used are the first appearance of Apocalypse, his origins, and the hit story “Age of Apocalypse” from the 1990’s. This film will be set in the 80’s which continues the series’ tradition of taking place in a new decade. It’s the same decade that Apocalypse debuted in X-Factor and also when that the comics grew popular. This final movie will bring Bryan Singer’s new trilogy to an end.
Apocalypse is one of the biggest bad guys that the X-Men have and will ever face. He is one of only a few villains that has threaten the human and mutant race from the past, present and future. I hope we get more homages to the comics and cartoons throughout the film and a glance at Cable. I am really interested in the romance between Jean and Scott, with some foreshadowing of what is to come in future movies (hopefully).
On May 27th we will experience the Apocalypse.
