BBC announced that Doctor Who’s new companion will be Pearl Mackie. While it was widely rumored that Raakhee Thakar of the British soap East Enders would be joining the Doctor in the TARDIS, the role ultimately went to Mackie. She will play Bill and her run will start at the beginning of the 10th series on her first major television role. Previously she’s had small roles in Doctors and Svengail. Currently, she is appearing in the National Theater’s West End Production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.
This was also the first time BBC unveiled the new companion live. It was revealed in a short clip during halftime of the FA Cup semi-final match between Everton and Manchester United. Filming will start later this year with new episodes airing in 2017. The 10th series will also be the last for head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat. He announced in January he will be stepping down from the show and Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall will be taking over the series.
