There have been many songs over the years that become popular due to being featured in movies. From "Eye of the Tiger” (Rocky) to “I Believe I Can Fly” (Space Jam), nerdy movies have featured songs that were already well known. Remember “The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" by Cyndi Lauper and “Ninja Rap” by Vanilla Ice? Both songs were original songs by the artist which had lyric and title changes to go with the movie. There was also that Queen song titled “Flash’s Theme” from the Flash Gordon movie which topped the billboards in UK and in the USA.
The one song that stands out the most amongst nerdy movies is “Trouble” from Shampoo for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. It premiered June 30th, 1995 and the soundtrack was filled with songs from artists like Van Halen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Devo.
“Higher Ground” from RHCP was one of the more well-known songs on the same soundtrack at the time and for “Trouble” to stand out the most from the movie was a great achievement for Shampoo. The song was featured prominently on radio stations and on other soundtracks after the MMPR movie. It was on repeat in my head when I would play with my MMPR toys after watching the movie.
This lead me to the local Warehouse Music (which became FYE) to look for the soundtrack on cassette. We will have to wait and see if new movie Power Rangers movie coming out in 2017 will feature a song that will become just as popular.
Some honorable mentions are the soundtrack for Queen of the Damned which featured some original tracks from Jonathan Davis of Korn which were well received. We can’t forget the “Mad World” covers from Donnie Darko and “Everything is AWESOME!!!” by Tegan and Sara/The Lonely Island for the LEGO Movie.
