If you grew up in the 80’s and early 90’s, you probably loved the Lethal Weapon movies. They are the quintessential buddy copy action comedy films. And now Fox is bringing those movies back in the form of a TV series. Mel Gibson is gone, replaced by Clayne Crawford as Riggs, with his partner Murtaugh now played by Damon Wayans in place of Danny Glover. You won’t remember Clayne Crawford from Wristcutters: A Love Story, but you will remember Damon Wayans from about a dozen movies you’ve seen on a TV at a doctor’s office, including Major Payne and Blankman.
Does the trailer feel like Lethal Weapon or are they spitting on a beloved franchise? The good news is the trailer looks like a Lethal Weapon movie amped up for today’s audiences. The beats are there. Riggs has gone crazy after losing his wife. Murtaugh is a family man trying to lay low and do his job. We get scenes of action and scenes of comedy. It might be an enjoyable show even if it loses some of that 80’s noir feel.
Maybe I’m just getting too old for this, but I still don’t feel the need for this reboot. Do you?
