Share Your Nerdiness with Your Children

We’ve all done it at one point or another, where we were so into a show or movie that we literally never stopped talking about it-- whether it was about the content or quick little lines that you can use in an everyday conversation. We share something of interest with a friend or a family member in hopes of them liking or even loving it as much as we do. Sharing an interest in something can create a great bond between friends and family. It can create a greater bond between a Mother and/or Father and their child(ren). With my daughter, it has luckily been a great experience.

The first thing I introduced to her was my love for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which was through endless amounts of weekend marathons of all 3 movies as well as the 80’s cartoon. She quickly became a Mikey fan and her favorite movie was “Secret of the Ooze.” She would throw a random “cowabunga” or “radical” into an outburst of excitement. Naturally when the new movie came out I was a bit worried about her being confused since she had endlessly watched the original movies and the turtles looked completely different. Thankfully that wasn’t the case, not only did we both enjoy the movie but she was able to understand that it was a whole different thing altogether. It was well received by both of us and it was added to our marathons once it was available for home viewing. It did help that we went to the drive-in and watched TMNT and Guardians of the galaxy in one sitting.

So once I opened the Star Wars floodgates to her, it was insanely awesome! From watching the Original Trilogy and the Prequels to going through Star Wars: The Clones Wars and Rebels, it became a must for her to have her hair done up in Princess Leia Buns. She grew a liking for Chewbacca and Yoda then become a huge Rey fan once TFA was released and insisted on that hair style as well(thanks YouTube for the tutorials on that). So now we have a routine of picking which Star Wars or TMNT gear we are going wear for the day. What we are going watch when we get home and if we are gonna eat pizza on a nightly basis, she wasn’t a big fan of me making her some blue milk.

Kids are a magical thing. Sharing something you love is with them is an amazing feeling and you shouldn't be afraid of letting them enter your nerdy world.
