Swedish game developer DICE released a new launch trailer for their new first-person action-adventure platformer Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, showcasing the new visuals and gameplay as well as some plot details of the new game.
We can assess that in this game we will be assuming the role of a younger Faith Connors as we tackle the totalist regime from our ziplines and utilizing kickass parkour CQC skills in this unnamed “Utopia.” Looking back on the original trailer for Mirror’s Edge, which was absolutely stunning for its time, and comparing to the one just released, we can see several key changes to look forward to as you reprise the role of one of video game’s rare leading ladies.
First key change is more of a technical one as the game which was originally developed on the unreal engine is now built using the newer Frostbite 3 engine. This allows for absolutely some most stunning visuals in current gen first person games (the cool vibrant colors help too). The combat system has had huge overhaul; guns have been completely removed from the player as weapons. Now focusing on faster and more fluid melee attacks that allow a player to either take down or evade an enemy while continuously on the move, the combat is brutal enough to scare off an MMA fighter. Previously, combat served more as a cumbersome break to the gameplay in order to emphasize it’s platforming aspects. Taking a page from Dying Light’s open world traversal which in turn was inspired by Mirror’s Edge, the platforming has gone from a linear progression to an open world scenario in order to dynamically complete your objective and as well as exploration.
Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst will be a great entry point into the series as it will give insight to Faith Connors origins and her role in changing the Utopian/Dystopian world.
Mirror’s Edge releases June 7th 2016. You can watch the launch trailer below:
