The international hit by Guillermo Del Toro took a huge leap out of the rumored-to-be-canceled pool to announce that Star Wars star John Boyega will play lead in the upcoming sequel to Pacific Rim.
Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba) from the previous film. Rinko Kikuchi (who played Mako Mori) and Charlie Hunnam (Raleigh Becket) are expected to return for the sequel, though nothing has been confirmed.
"I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job," says Del Toro.
The original film boasted a $411 Billion Box Office result, though mostly from international sales and this time Del Toro will sit back to produce the sequel. Steven DeKnight will be directing.
Pacific Rim more than doubled its budget overseas, but domestically, the film couldn't perform out of the B-movie range. However, under the new director, Pacific Rim 2 may be of more the American palate. DeKnight has directed fan favorites including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, Angel, Smallville, and most recently Marvel's Daredevil.
From humble Attack the Block days, Boyega steps up in yet another sci-fi cult classic. Will he cancel the apocalypse like his father before? Will he be drift-compatible with his adopted sister? As the movie continues development, we may have answers soon.
