Fifth Element Director's Next Sci-Fi Adventure Wraps Production
The Fifth Element director Luc Benson wraps up production for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, showing off the brilliant visual world at SDCC. The original comic book story of Valerian inspired Benson to work on The Fifth Element instead of a Valerian film due to the lack of technology. With today's visual effects capabilities, Valerian boasts over 2,700 special effects shots compared to The Fifth Element's mere 200.
The $180 million budget film is both the most expensive European movie made thus far and also inspired Star Wars. Dane Dehaan, who plays Valerian, even calls it the original space opera. Luc Benson stated that recent sci-fi movies are becoming stale and he aims for Valerian to offer something fresh.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets tells the story of Valerian, a time-traveling cop, and his partner Laureline (played by Cara Delevingne). The movie is set to release in June 2017.
