2016 seems to be the year where nostalgia is king and everything 80s and 90s is making a glorious comeback. The next blast from the past comes from toy manufacturer Funko as they are set to release a line of action figures featuring the characters of Jim Henson’s 1982 Fantasy-Adventure classic, The Dark Crystal. The line will join the likes of Alien, Back to the Future, Firefly, as well as many others as part of Funko’s ReAction series.
The announcement of this line comes after Funko already revealed the Landstrider as a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive and the Garthim with a winged Kira as a New York Comic-Con exclusive. Though you won’t be able to get your hands on those exclusive releases unless you were there, the upcoming toy line will include key characters that no fan will want to miss.
The line itself is loosely based on an idea from the 80s for a Dark Crystal tie-in toy line that never was. We begin with the young Gelfling heroes Jen and Kira (comes with furry pal Fizzgig), the Oracle Aughra, The Chamberlain Skeksis, and Ursol the Mystic who comes in a deluxe box package. Within each package is a piece of the nominal crystal and as each character is purchased you will slowly create your very own, albeit smaller, replica. Finally you too can complete a quest to heal The Dark Crystal.
Up until now the only other Dark Crystal toy that existed was a Chamberlain Skeksis created by the National Entertainment Collectibles Association (NECA). Funko’s release marks the first full toy line for Dark Crystal fans and one can only hope that these initial characters are just the beginning. There are still the merged UrSkeks, Pod People, Crystal Bats, and many more that could join the series. As any fan knows, Jim Henson and Brian Froud’s imaginative world is expansive and the only way any other characters can become a reality is for us to get out there and collect them all!
According to Funko’s website no official release date has been set, it only states that the line will be released sometime in October so be sure to check their site regularly.
