Top 10 Songs for Nerdy Parties
Generally speaking, popular music is not designed for the nerdy among us. It’s mostly about relationships, love or sex, and a few scattered other tropes. Some of the music on the fringes delves into other ideas, such as punk albums about politics or hip hop songs about historical events. It’s even rare to find a really fun song for nerds, geeks, or folks into fandoms. A few awesome – and some awful but catchy – songs do exist, if one looks hard enough.
STOKOVOR – THE CODE
It’s a band named after the Klingon idea of the afterlife from Star Trek, dressed as Klingons, and singing metal songs about being a Klingon. That’s really what’s important in this universe, I think. Because revenge, as the Klingon’s say, is a dish best served loud and thrashing. Or something like that.
THE HOLD STEADY – THE BEAR AND THE MAIDEN FAIR
There’s only one right way to kick off a list like this, and it’s with an awesome cover song from The Game of Thrones. This song is a way more peppy, modern version of a very important song from the novels and show. Plus, the song appears over the end credits of season 3’s Walk of Punishment. The bear! The bear! The maiden fair!
WEIRD AL – DARE TO BE STUPID
Now, of course Weird Al had to make my list but why on earth did I pick Dare to Be Stupid over, say, White & Nerdy? It’s simple, really. Weird Al’s song appeared in the Transformers movie (i.e. the good, animated one) on the soundtrack during the Junkion planet exploits, when Wreck-Gar was running around AND THEN Weird Al voiced Wreck-Gar on a newer animated series.
LED ZEPPELIN – RAMBLE ON
How in the world did one of the most popular rock acts of all time make this list? Am I crazy? Yes, but this song is entirely about the Lord of the Rings books. Don’t believe me? The lyrics are chock full of Middle Earth references… Gollum, Mordor, the Evil One… Throw this song and Misty Mountain Hop into rotation next time you play some AD&D.
SNOOP DOGG - BATMAN & ROBIN
Look, Prince had a much better song from a Batman movie. Heck, most of the other Batman movies were better. Period. But you have to love Snoop Dogg and you can't not love terrible superhero movies. Plus, sometimes you want to dance.
THE RAMONES – SPIDER-MAN TV SHOW THEME
Look, I could make an entire list of the best punk covers of cartoon theme songs (Hmm, that gives me an idea…), but at least one had to make this list! There is no better band than the Ramones, and no better cartoon than the cheesy 60’s Spider-Man cartoon. I mean, hey, it became a meme! It’s also one of my ringtones…
GREENSKEEPER – LOTION
If you are into horror or just great movies, you can’t go wrong with The Silence of the Lambs. Based on the novel of the same name, the movie follows an FBI Agent, Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), as she interviews notorious cannibal serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in the hopes of gaining insight to stop current serial killer “Buffalo Bill” (Ted Levine). If you haven’t seen it, go see it now! Then have fun with this weird, tongue-in-cheek tribute by a Chicago indie band…
WEEZER – IN THE GARAGE
I could put a multitude of Weezer songs on here. “Watching Grunge leg drop New Jack through a press table…” Weezer is to nerds what Metallica are to metal fans or Outkast is to people who like real hip hop. They’re popular and popular for a reason. This song, though, is where it’s at. Want to hang out and play board games in a garage? Listen to In the Garage, which includes Dungeons & Dragons references as well as X-Men ones.
BLUE OYSTER CULT – GODZILLA
Even if you don’t know who the hell Blue Oyster Cult are, I can basically guarantee you’ve heard their hit song (Don’t Fear) The Reaper. It was in about 1,000 movies, including Scream. It’s this song, though, that really hits a nerd nerve for me. I grew up watching Kaiju movies on late night TV. Characters like Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Gamera were beyond awesome when I was 10. You know what else was beyond awesome when I was 10? Riding around in cool cars and blasting this song by Blue Oyster Cult with my family.
MC CHRIS – FETT’s VETTE
MC Chris is probably the most popular nerdcore rapper around, having done voice work on several Adult Swim shows (“Hesh wants sex!”). He has a pretty great discography and almost any of his songs can make the list, but there is one above all others: Fett’s Vette. You can’t go wrong with a song about Boba Fett bounty hunting to pay off his awesome sports car.
