Top 10 Items Every Cosplayer Must Own

February 12, 2017

There are tons of types of cosplayers out there, but what everyone has in common is they can all take advantage of tips and tricks to make their cosplays a little better, and a little more comfortable. Whether you sewed your cosplay yourself, bought your costume online, or bought clothes and altered them, everyone can add these things to their costumes to make them look like the real thing!

DANCE TIGHTS!

Wearing tights under your cosplay that show your bare legs always makes the costume look better. Panty hoes rip very easily, and are expensive to replace. Dance tights are made for ballerinas to jump and roll around in, so they’re built to last! (Plus if you want to pop, lock and drop it while in costume, the opportunity will always be there now.) I know what you’re saying, “My cosplays don’t need tights! I don’t do that kind of cosplay!” Well, I’ve got some good news for you, because I also recommend the….

Dance Belt!

Dance Belt are made for male dancers who don’t want their dick flying around mid jump.  Whether you’re cosplaying Deadpool, Sailor Moon, Superman, Supergirl or Nudist Beach ANYONE, and your afraid of your costume hugging your junk too tight, a dance belt is the way to go!

Always remember that your crotch is in the eye level of children, so weigh that in to your dance belt buying decisions.

Wig Combs!

All wigs are frustrating. ESPECIALLY if it’s your first time wearing a wig. ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY if it’s a ponytail or pigtail wig. ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY if you have a giant, inhuman, freakishly large head like I do.

What I like to do is if my wig doesn’t fit my head correctly, or I don’t want my hair line showing through the back or front, I sew or glue wig combs (or wig clips) into my wig on both sides and the front and the back. It keeps it extra sturdy on all sides.

Giant Pack of Wig Caps!

Who doesn’t lose their wig caps? Who doesn’t hate losing their wig caps the day of the con and having to spend $3-$7 in the dealers room for one? If you buy wig caps (any brand, website, type, color, material is completely fine. I use the netted kind but everyone pretty much is cool with all of them) in bulk, then there’s much less of a chance that you will lose all ten. Even if you do lose all ten, just buy another ten. Forever.

(P.S. If you read this tip and said out loud “I never lose my wig caps. I keep mine in a safe place and have had no problem keeping the same one for years.” Go be perfect somewhere else. Why are you even reading this if you’re so great? Don’t you have a Noble Prize to go collect or something?)

Double Sided Tape! (or Fashion Tape!)

This one seems like a no brainer, but there’s a billion uses to it. No matter how good we are at making, buying or altering costumes, sometimes certain parts don’t lay flat. Or elastic doesn’t hold it all the way up. This is a quick fix to help your costumes (specifically bust around the bust, or boots/socks/gloves that won’t stay up) look like an angel came down from the sky and molded your costume to your body using love and magic dust (or close enough).

Concealer!

Okay, so chances are you might already have professional grade concealer. This specific recommendation is for people who don’t own it yet. Guys, girls, non binary, whatever gender you identify with, concealer will help you. My guy friend has never worn it but wore it for a photo shoot with me. He said it helped a lot. This particular brand seems like the best quality for the lowest price. Elf does some pretty good concealer too.

Concealer works on face and body acne, as well as dark under eye bags and general discoloration of the skin. If you feel more comfortable without make up, you can still rock it though!

Safety Pins!

Do I need to say anymore? Safety pins. Keep two with you at all times. All times. Anywhere you go. Do it.

GOT2BGLUED Styling Products!

I use got2bglued hair gel and hair spray for my wigs (Editor's Note: I use it for my mohawk, too. - KB) if they have crazy gravity defying curls or I just want a strong hold for regular curls. Seriously, it’s like a ghost is following me around and holding up my Saber ahoge.

Okay, maybe that was a unnecessarily creepy way of describing it, but it’s true. It makes wig hair basically stand at a 90 angle if you use it right.  I used a bobby pin for safety, but it usually will hold without it.

False Eyelashes!

I’ll let you in on a secret. Nobody’s eyelashes are that long. In almost every shoot, they’re probably wearing false eyelashes. (or at least a TON of mascara.) If you don’t feel like paying $12 for two strips of fake hair, my favorite store to buy them in bulk is Daiso.

If you live in California, there are a ton, but if you don’t you can buy ten pairs for $20. they all come with eye lash glue usually.

Tide 2 Go Pens!

I DON’T CARE WHO YOU ARE. YOU HAVE TO EAT SOMETIME. OR BE OUTSIDE AND AT MERCY OF BIRDS WITH COLONS. OR MAYBE EVEN RUN INTO A CRAZED CHILD WITH MARKERS. I DON’T KNOW. BUY A TIDE TO GO PEN. IT’LL HELP WITH STAINS. NOBODY COUNTS ON STAINS. YOU CAN COUNT ON HAVING THIS WIZARD STICK THAT MAGICALLY REMOVES GROSS SPOTS FROM YOUR COSTUME.

(If any CEOs from Tide INC. are reading this, yes I will accept a job writing slogans for your products.)
