On February 2nd, 2016, a meme circulated around predicting the impending death of the beloved Echidna, Knuckles. Many of you may remember Knuckles from the Sonic the Hedgehog Universe growing up. My brother had an obsession with him when we were younger, and a couple Knuckles dolls got packed into our Christmas decorations boxes so we always ironically hang them on our tree

The prophecy meme foretold that Echidna’s only live for 16 years. His age was then discovered as 16 years old. Then, upon googling Knuckle’s birthday, it was in fact the 2nd of February. So, what happened? Did our beloved childhood icon die faithfully on 11:59 pm 02/02/17? Not quite.
Upon asking the official Sonic the Hedgehog fan page, there were two answers given. One by a commenter, and one by the official Sonic page itself...

One being, Knuckles has actually been around for 23 years. His character was introduced as a 16 year old, but Knuckles has existed as an entity in time and space for over 23 years. (Same.) So if you combine his debut age with how long he has been a member of the Sonic franchise, he is 39 years old.
This solution begs more questions than it answers, so luckily all of our grief was put at ease by the official Sonic the Hedgehog facebook page. They said “Don't worry, he's alive and well. (The great emerald's power allows him to feel.)”.
I know during this time of national turmoil, it can be hard dealing with the uncertainty of whether or not Knuckles lived, especially since he rarely makes public appearances anymore. But fear not, I, with my bachelors degree in Communications Media and Professional Writing, have cracked the case. Here’s to another 23 years with the best (and probably only) cartoon Echidna around.
