No Capes, No Sequels, No Problem

February 17, 2017

...Or 5 movies to check out that aren't superhero movies or sequels.

Every movie year, we are inundated with either comic book, sequels, or TV-to-film reboots. It makes you wonder if there is anything else out there. Well there is! Here are four original films, and one remake, that are worth a watch.

GET OUT

February 24

Written and directed by Jordan Peele (Key and Peele), the film centers on a young African-American man's (Daniel Kaluuya) visit to his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) parent’s estate. He soon discovers that many of the black residents in the town have gone missing and is advised by a fellow African-American to “get out.” Recently screened at the Sundance Film Festival, Get Out is Peele’s directorial debut.

THE BELKO EXPERIMENT

March 17

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 isn’t the only movie James Gunn made coming out this year.  Written by Gunn and directed by Greg McLean, The Belko Experiment is about 80 Americans locked in their high-rise corporate office in a twisted social experiment, being ordered by an unknown voice from the company’s intercom system. They must participate in killing their fellow co-workers or risk getting killed themselves.

COLOSSAL

April 7

Anne Hathaway is a woman who discovers that her mental breakdown is the cause for several catastrophic events. Also starring Jason Sudeikis and Dan Stevens, the film is being touted as a movie where Hathaway’s character is seemingly controlling a kaiju on the other side of the world. It also explores the gender relationships where everything is not all hearts and flowers.

RAW

March 10

In this film from France, a young vegetarian is subjected to a carnivorous hazing in vet school, where an unbidden taste for meat begins to grow in her. Horror films about cannibalism are nothing new, so it will be interesting to watch director and writer Julia Ducournau’s take on it.

THE BEGUILED

June 30

The only non-original on the list, The Beguiled is a remake of the 1971 film starring Clint Eastwood. In the film an injured Union Solider, now played by Colin Farrell, is taken in by a Confederate girls’ boarding school. During his stay, he cons his way into each of the lonely women’s hearts, who at first turn on each other, but eventually they turn on him. The film also stars Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning. Directed by Sofia Coppola, this will be her first foray in the western genre.
