Trekkies rejoice! We have our new Captain.
Jason Isaacs has been cast for Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca. Best known among nerds for his portrayal of Lucius Malfoy on screen for the Harry Potter series, Isaacs is a seasoned actor and probably the highest profile member of the new Discovery crew.
While the series plans to follow Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead fame as Lieutenant Commander Rainsford—a detour from every other series—we can expect to see the Captain often. Given Isaacs propensity to play villains, like the antagonist in the Netflix series The OA, we can imagine that this particular Star Fleet captain will be more hard-assed and potentially less likable than we are used to.
It could, however, be exactly what the series needs; creating tension between a captain and his crew has always been a go-to plot line of the previous series.
Other members of the crew include James Frain (Sarek), Michelle Yeoh (Captain Georgiou), Maulik Pancholy (Dr. Nambue), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Stamets) and Doug Jones (Lt. Saru). The timeline is set in the prime universe, separate from the recent movies starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. It takes place before the original series, but after Starfleet has been established.
Is this a good addition to the Star Trek universe? Does Discovery even have a chance? Let us know in the comments!
