Super Mario Odyssey Trailer Review
We all knew it was going to be a fact of life: a Super Mario game on the Switch. But what none of us expect was, uh, this...
Yeah. Mario running around with realistic people that are, for reasons unknown, way taller than him, as well as meeting a semi-realistic dinosaur. It's like our beloved plumber from Brooklyn meshed with his awful 90's movie. I can't decide if this is awesome or awful. Insert Grand Theft Mario joke her.
What do we actually KNOW about Super Mario Odyssey?
Well, it looks like Mario and Peach and Bowser are dressed for a wedding? Then, of course, Bowser (probably) kidnaps Peach. Mario has to run around with his new friend, a magic hat, possessing enemies, people, and a Tyrannosaur in order to save the day.
We should see this game and all it's bizarre awesomeness on October 27th, 2017. Odyssey will be in the Breath of the Wild-style of gameplay, allowing more open exploration, checkpoints, and traveling. This way of Mario gameplay hasn't really existed since Super Mario Sunshine. It's worth noting that both Odyssey and Sunshine were a little bit bizarre and off the beaten path for Mario. Recent reports also tell us that there will be some kind of co-op gameplay. We will also see Amiibos, initially confirmed are wedding-themed Mario, Peach, and Bowser. What, no Luigi? Sad.
I want to also point out that some of the themes of realistic places and times within our world are vaguely reminiscent of a famously canceled non-Nintendo platform Mario game, Super Mario's Wacky Worlds for the Philips CD-i. And, much like Wacky Worlds, Odyssey was also developed by a team that didn't really feature input from Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto. The plot thickens.
Once the game shows up at my house - on release day - Nerdbot will upload some gameplay footage and our initial reactions.
Are you excited for this new direction of our favorite game icon or terrified? Let Nerdbot know in the comments!
