When the Hellboy reboot was announced, most people thought this was the worst thing ever. Why mess with del Toro's brilliantly realised uninverse? Well, while initial reports about the emerging reboot have done little to assuage these fears, things just got interesting.
In a recent casting announcement, it's emrged that Ian McShane will be playing Professor Bloom, the role originally filled by screen legend John Hurt. Few actors out there would relish the idea of trying to top anything that Hurt has done on screen, but McShane has the brass balls to take it on smiling.
Ian was most recently seen on the small screen as Mr Wednesday in the adaption of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, and in theatres opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick 2. McShane is consistently brilliant in everything he does (except perhaps Lovejoy) and was the most interesting thing to see in the two aforerementioned offerings.
Doubtless this will also be the case in the new Hellboy movie, with McShane likely to bring an interesting new take on Big Red's mentor. There's no realease schedule as yet, but filming is due to kick off later this year, and all of a sudden I am finding myself paying attention.
