Esports has been a growing obsession for quite a while now. Many leagues and games have massive international tournaments with absurdly big pots and payouts. EVO, the most prominent fighting game tournament, this year had the Street Fighter 5 finals streamed on ESPN; whereas, the finals for Super Smash Bros. For Wii U aired on Disney XD. Even if it doesn't interest you, it is impossible to ignore that massive, and growing, appeal of Esports. So the next logical question is: What's next?
The Olympics apparently.
According to an interview with the Associated Press, Paris, who is set to host the Olympic Games in 2024, is considering the inclusion of Esports. The interview cites that the growing interest in Esports is representative of the youth which is one of the main things that the Olympics are supposed to represent. While a final verdict won't be rendered for a couple more years, this could be the first time we see Esports on the biggest competitive stage in the world. This could be a massive step in legitimizing Esports around the world.
