Tomb Raider Movie Potentially Not Terrible

The interwebs have been relatively quiet on the subject of the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot, but British movie mag Empire has just gotten its hands on a new image of the film's star, Alicia Vikander, which you can see below.

Source: IGN.

The synopsis of the upcoming movie's plot sounds promising, chiefly in how it appears to be bucking the trend and actually using the plot from the game on which it is based, namely the excellent 2013 Tomb Raider which was also a series reboot.

That plot sets Croft on a quest to a mysterious island off the coast of Japan in the search for her long lost adventurer father. The below image will be a familiar sight to fans of the game, as bow play was a major feature of the title and a new one to that iteration of the video game.

This bucks a trend, as movies have a habit of totally ignoring the game they are based on, the godawful Mario Bros. Being the shining example. This movie changed Bowser from a giant turtle into a regular looking man that evolved from a T-Rex. Additionally Mario's trademark high jump happened only once in the whole movie, and then only with the aid of mechanised boots rather than him just being able to jump.

These are only a couple of the ridiculous faux pas that the movie made, and what makes it so frustrating is that if the studio had been braver we could have had a technicolour acid trip of a kids' movie the likes of which hadn't really been seen since Willy Wonker and The Chocolate Factory. That is exactly the kind of movie Mario Bros. should have been; just as bat-shit crazy as the game it was based on.

Things have gotten better over the years with the most recent example, last years Assassin's Creed starring Michael Fassbender, at least keeping key points of the Creed mythology. They still insisting on new characters when they could have just used a story that we knew people already liked.

When asked about this, executive producer Pat Crowley said, “We essentially did them all on our own because we wanted to have an original script." If you want an original script, Pat, then have an original fucking idea! Stop ruining people's fond memories of their favourite video games just so you can polish your own ego in the laziest way possible!

Surprisingly the Assassin's Creed pic came off reasonably well in that it was distinctly average rather than flat out terrible. Hopes can justifiably be high for the upcoming Tomb Raider movie however as it seems that, for now at least, someone thought using the story from the game that people loved so much might be a smart idea.
