Raising Dion Coming to Netflix
We are at a crisis point. There are so many superhero movies and shows these days that we are risking marketing saturation and people basically becoming sick of them and losing interest.
This isn’t helped by the fact that most of these movies tell the same kind of story. The comic book industry has shown us this doesn’t have to be the case, however, and one notable example of this is 2015’s ‘Raising Dion’.
The book tells the story of a young black woman raising her super powered son and trying to make sure he becomes more super hero than super villain. This is all while avoiding the expected outside interest in his gifts from shady government types who want to use him as a weapon.
The book gained a lot of notoriety from the off thanks to a short introductory film of the same name that quickly went viral. Now this infinitely more personal and arguably more interesting story has been picked up by Netflix, with the support of Michael B. Jordan who will also appear in a guest role.
The initial run will consist of ten episodes and the book’s creator, Dennis Liu, says that he created the title because he wanted to see more diversity on film and TV. There’s now word on when we can expect to see the show yet, but the crew is growing with Blade Runner 2049 scribe Michael Green also on board.
The book itself is actually available for free as a digital download, though if you want to support Dennis and his work you can also purchase a hard copy for a very reasonable $4.00. The book is available at Indy Planet and you can also watch the viral short below, or on Dennis’ official site at www.dennis-liu.com.
